BODY_CONFIDENCE (2024)

BODY_CONFIDENCE combines two videos of myself to create infinite iterations of forms that do not fit the normative definitions of a human body. It then processes these new bodies through an algorithm (Google's Mediapipe) that attempts to classify what the new form is, and then create a pose model for the body. The piece consists of a series of videos that play in a loop.

To care for my type 1 diabetes I use an automated insulin delivery (AID) system. This involves the use of a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that communicates with an insulin pump, The insulin pump uses this blood sugar data (and some other info) to make automated decisions for dosing me with insulin.

These AID systems require converting my blood into data in order to predict future blood sugars, to be used as feedback to regulate my blood sugar. This cybernetic logic is seen throughout all of our technology. The abstraction of bodies into data in order to predict, regulate, and control them

This cyborg existence questions the boundaries of what a body is. Who gets to define what is a body? How is that definition codified in software? The generated hybrid forms break the system as it fails to identify what the algorithm's creators determined should be considered a body.
